A decade of change

Top 10 Consumer Technological Advances that Changed the World

1. Smartphones- Smartphones have gained their popularity around 2007 when they started to be used by the average person, instead of just by business people and executives. Smartphones allow users to access the internet, send emails, send IMs and text messages, and even edit work documents almost anywhere in the world. The phones now have worldwide capabilities and have become a mobile office and entertainment center for many cell phone users.

2. E-Book- The battle of which e-book maker will become dominant is not over, therefore I will not mention one model only. However, the technology that allows users to read and download books from almost anywhere they can get wireless coverage has revolutionized how we read our newspapers and books. The best part of the e-book is the fact that it is as small as a paperback book, but can hold thousands of books on the hard drive.

3. High-speed internet- Many of us take for granted how fast our internet works, but as an internet user in the early 1990's I can easily say it is a huge improvement. Early internet speeds were slow and frustrating, even early broadband would feel very slow today. High-speed internet has helped shaped the way we social network, do business, and stay in touch with current events.

4. iPod- The iPod revolutionized the way we listen to music on the go by becoming the first successful MP3/4 player that gained mass popularity. The ability to listen to your entire music
library on the go was previously unheard of without carrying around a stack of CDs. The newest iPod technology, such as the iPod Touch has revolutionized the way we play games, listen to music, watch videos, and access the internet on the go.

5. Google- Without a doubt Google has revolutionized the way we use the internet on a daily basis. The super company, whether you know it or not, it present in almost every popular internet application in the form of ads or search bars.

6. E-mail- E-mail is another technology feat that we take for granted because many of us grew up using it. However, e-mail has made sending documents much easier and faster than previously.

7. DVDs- DVDs gained mass popularity due to their low cost, low player cost, and vast improvement over VHS systems. DVDs allowed users to enjoy a nicer picture and sound quality over VHSs. Blu-ray did not make this list as DVDs because they are still not present in every home and do not offer a huge improvement over DVDs.

8. Blu-ray players- Although Blu-rays did not make this list, Blu-ray player did. Some Blu-ray players have a feature that upscales DVD quality, which makes DVD quality improve, which is most noticeable on older movies.

9. iTunes- Before iTunes was released many of us resorted to illegal music downloading sights or trying to find legitimate businesses that had every song we were looking for. I do not know if my readers remember when Wal-Mart was in the music business in the early 2000's, but they eventually left the market after iTunes become so widely popular. iTunes was the first music store to offer almost every song that you could think of in an easy to navigate manner.

10. Wireless internet- Wi-Fi has revolutionized the way we print documents, use laptops, and play video games. Wi-Fi is without a doubt one of the best consumer electronic technological advancements, ever.
